Specimen Quality (MOT Level)
MOT is the abbreviation that Cryos NY uses to determine the range of motile sperm within a sample. Motile sperm are sperm that swim in a foward progression both linearly and non-linearly which offer clients the best chance at achieving successful pregnancies.
Cryos NY classifies the quality of its specimens into various MOT ranges. Below you will find a table detailing the various MOT levels, motile sperm count ranges and what MOT level is appropriate for the various artificial insemination treatments.
| MOT Level |
Motile Sperm/Straw |
Appropriate Procedures |
| MOT5 |
2.5 million to 5 million |
IVF |
| MOT10 |
5 million to 9.5 million |
IVF, IUI, Home Insemination |
| MOT20 |
10 million to 15 million |
IVF, IUI, Home Insemination |
| MOT30+ |
+15 million |
IVF, IUI, Home Insemination |
Typically, Fertility Clinics/Doctors within the United States recommend using between 10 million and 20 million motile sperm per insemination for IUI-treatments and/or home inseminations. Motile sperm counts higher than 20 million for IUI-treatments do not offer any increased probability of achieving successful pregnancies.
Based on this information, Cryos NY suggests that for IUI-treatments clients use the following specimen qualities:
- Two (2) IUI-Ready MOT10 straws per insemination. By combining two (2) IUI-Ready MOT10 straws of the same donor, clients will have a sample between 10 millillion and 20 million motile sperm.
Or
- One (1) IUI-Ready MOT20 straw or greater MOT level per insemination. As stated by the above table, one (1) unit MOT20 or greater MOT level will provide clients with a motile sperm count greater than 10 million per insemination.
Cryos NY strongly recommends speaking with your fertility doctor and/or clinic to discuss the above information and what type of samples should be purchased for your artificial insemination procedure.
