Artificial Inseminations

The below information is intended for information purposes only and is highly recommend to be discussed with your doctor. A good place to start a conversation about artificial inseminations is with your Ob/Gyn.

In the world of infertility, there are three main types of artificial inseminations:

  • Home Insemination

A Home Insemination (aka. Turkey Baster Method) is when a client chooses to perform an artificial insemination in the comforts of her home. Specimens used for a home insemination are only to be deposited vaginally. In no way should a client attempt to deposit specimens directly into the cervix and/or uterus.

Equipment typically used for a home insemination is a standard 1 mL syringe which is used to aspirate the semen into the syringe as well as deposit them vaginally. With every home insemination, Cryos NY provides clients a syringe and detailed picture instructions on how to aspirate the semen from the straw and into the syringe.

If you are interested in performing a home insemination, clients are required to provide Cryos NY a Release Authorization to be signed by your doctor. You may read more about the required documents by Clicking Here

  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

An Intrauterine Insemination, abbreviated as IUI, is the type of insemination where semen is deposited directly into the uterus. By bypassing the vaginal canal and cervix, the probability of achieving a successful pregnancy is greater than that of a home insemination.

All semen specimens have to be washed prior to an IUI-treatment. Clients may purchase IUI-Ready samples from sperm banks to be used for an IUI-treatment or clients may purchase unwashed samples for their fertility clinic/doctor to wash prior to the IUI-treament.

Typically, IUI treatments are the most economical assisted reproductive method available. Many health plans are beginning to cover IUI treatments.

IUI-treatments are only to be performed by licensed practitioners such as fertility doctors, fertility clinics, nurse practitioners, and/or mid-wifes.

  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the process in which eggs are extracted from the female body of which fertilization is to occur outside the body. Embryos that are created are then inputted back into the female body or frozen and stored for future use.

IVF is the most expensive assisted reproductive methods available.
